A Friend I Really Know

Feast of Saint John, Apostle and evangelist

1John 1:1-4 Psalm 97; John 20:1-8

You do know him and have seen him. John 14:7

John wrote, “What we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you” (1John 1:3) Have I actually

“seen and heard” Jesus Christ? Can I tell others about him?

We mustn’t underestimate the gift of faith. It isn’t just believing. It is seeing. Faith is the gift of knowing Jesus Christ.

This isn’t just intellectual knowledge. This is mystical knowledge—the truest, most certain knowledge there is. It is a sharing in God’s own knowledge of himself. Faith is seeing by the divine light of God. It is an ongoing mystical experience.

To be experience, it must be conscious. To be conscious, it must be a human act. So we have to “translate” light into enlightenment, the one Word of God into multiple human words. This involves reflecting on the Word and words of God. Meditation. Prayer.

Prayer is a process in which divine knowledge becomes human knowledge. The mystical becomes an experience. Then we not only know, we know that we know.

Jesus is the friend who shares himself with us more deeply than any human can. The “grace of our Lord Jesus Christ” is the gift of sharing in Jesus’s own acts of being, knowing, and loving. It is a divine and human experience. Like Jesus himself, we become both human and divine.

That is a mystery to ponder.

ACTION: Don’t just think. Believe. Don’t just believe. Think.

PRAYER: “Lord, in your light let me see light” (Psalm 36:9). Lord, let your words inside me enlighten, move, and guide me.
