Lectionary No. 23
Genesis 9:8–15; Psalm 25; 1 Peter 3:18–22; Mark 1:12-15
"There shall not be another flood to devastate the earth." Genesis 9:11
But the Father promised there would be another flood, not to devastate the earth, but to bring life to everyone on it:
I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring (Isaiah 44:3).
Water is a gift—and also a symbol, a reminder—of the Father’s love (see “Vidi Aquam,” Ezekiel 47:1).
Jesus fulfilled the Father’s promise when he poured out the water of Baptism on the world: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
Let anyone who is thirsty come to me… To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life… “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive (John 7:37; Revelation 21:6.)
Jesus, the Spirit, Baptism—all are gifts of our Father. The water we drink, swim and surf in; the rivers and oceans, are all gifts of the Father. Just seeing water should make us conscious of our thirst for God and excite thirst for more.
ACTION: Every time you see water, thank your Father for it. And take it to the level of mystery.
PRAYER: “Father, give me the water of life.”
