Ministry As Unconditional Love

by Fr. David M. Knight

Monday of the Eighteenth Week of Ordinary Time

The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

Lectionary 407

Jer 28:1-17/Mt 14:13-21

As Christians, do we believe God is going to give us peace and earthly blessings? Or do we expect disaster?

Jeremiah 28:1-17 says Hananiah is a false prophet because he predicted an early return from slavery in Babylon. Jeremiah answered:

From of old, the prophets who were before you and me prophesied war, woe, and pestilence.... But the prophet who prophesies peace is recognized as truly sent by the Lord only when his prediction is fulfilled.

Jesus prophesied both. His birth was announced by angels singing “Peace among those whom he favors!” This was how the apostles announced him, and Jesus clearly said peace was the fruit of his death and resurrection: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.... Peace be with you.”

On the other hand, Jesus seems to contradict himself: “I have not come to bring peace, but a sword [division].” The answer, of course, is that his peace depends on the way we receive him. (See Acts 10:36; Matthew 10:34; Luke 2:14; 10:5-6; 12:51; 24:36; John 14:27.)

Evangelization is a call with conditions; an invitation that is a challenge; a gift that is not ours until we accept it. We have to make a personal choice.

But ministry is a little different. Yes, it calls forth faith, hope and love, but it is given unconditionally. Ministers don’t ask if someone is “worthy.” They just comfort, heal and love as Jesus did.

Matthew 14:13-21: Jesus, “moved with pity,” cured the sick and fed all who were there. This is ministry

Initiative: When you minister, don’t judge. Jesus just said, “Feed my sheep.”
