So How Do We Prepare?
An effective way to examine our conscience before confession is to ask whether Christianity is bearing in our life the fruit Jesus promised it would. If it is not, the fault does not lie with Jesus. No, we all received the “gift of the Spirit” at baptism. If that gift is not bearing its fruit in our lives, then something is wrong inside of us. And we need to find it.
Ask yourself: If I am living by the Spirit, why is my life not characterized by the “fruit of the Spirit”? By love? By joy? By peace? By patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? When I find the answers to those questions, I will know what to bring to confession.
Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” Is there any reason to believe he will not keep that promise when we prepare for confession? When confession calls us to ask the questions we need to ask, we will feel the Holy Spirit calling us beyond law-observance to spiritual response; beyond good behavior to witness; beyond legalism to discernment. This is to experience the “gift of the Spirit.”
