Living the New Covenant

When Jesus gave his New Law, and specifically his “new commandment,” it was in the context of entering into a New Covenant with his people.

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.(John 13:34–35)

Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”(Luke 22:19–20) We keep the law of Christ, not just because we are humans, but because we are Christians. By entering into the Church, we entered into a new covenant with God. If we fail to live up to it, we are failing not only Jesus but also our brothers and sisters in the new People of God.
