Our Father Makes Us God
Understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. John 10:38
We cannot say “I am God” without qualification. But the shocking truth is, for Christians to say without qualification they are not God is more false than to say they are. It ignores the deep mystery of grace.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers another shocker that requires more explanation to deny than to affirm: “We are not just Christians; we have become Christ!” (no. 795).
Jesus, accused of “making yourself God,” makes parallel statements about himself and about us:
“The Father who dwells in me does his works” (John 14:10).
“Believe the works… understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father” (John 10:38).
Then he says:
“One who believes in me will also do the works that I do” (John 14:12).
“You will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you (John 14:20).
Paul said God sent him “to make known…this mystery, which is Christ in you” (Colossians 1:27).
“In Christ” we share in the unique Life of God. The mystery of our identity is: we are “daughters and sons in the only Son, gods in the only God.” Our Father has made us divine.
If we don’t know that, we don’t know Christ.
ACTION: Stay conscious you have divine life in you empowering you to act as a son or daughter of God.
PRAYER: “Father, hallowed be your Name!”
