Living as God’s Stewards

What is required of us as stewards is first to notice what needs to be changed around us and then to try to do something about it.

All of us are equally responsible for the fidelity, the growth, and the mission of the People of God. And as the People of God we are all responsible for bringing his reign to the world.

This requires us to be attentive to what is happening around us, and to be outspoken about what we see and how we think things could be improved. We need to do this with humility and love. St. Paul gives guidelines for effectively building up the Church and the world (see 1 Corinthians 13:4–10; Ephesians 4:11–13).

Awareness of accountability as “stewards of the manifold grace of God” is awareness of having a gift to be accountable for. It is the experience of one’s existence as entrusted relationship, of one’s life as a sharing in the meaning and purpose of Christ’s life, of one’s time as having eternal value. This awareness is a mystical experience. We need to acknowledge and embrace it in confession.
