Lectionary no. 194 (Jeremiah 23:5-8; Psalm 72; Matthew 1:18-24)
He shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save. Psalm 72:12
A 79-year-old nun was driving me through a deserted stretch of North Dakota in the dead of winter. It was the first time I had ever seen ice form on the inside of the windshield.
“What happens if we break down?”
“Pray your cell phone works!” was all she said.
Imagine being in need with no one to call on.
That never happens to Christians. “Behold, the virgin shall… bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Jesus hears.
“Yes, but how do we know he will answer?”
He promised he would: “He shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.”
It may not be when, or the way, that we want. But Jesus does hear, and he will answer. Even if we don’t know what his answer will be, it is a great thing to know he is listening. We are never alone.
To be a Christian means you always have someone to call on.
DAILY PRACTICE: Every time you walk through a door, remember Jesus will be with you on the other side.
ADVENT PRAYER: Lord, thank you for being here.
