Week VI in Ordinary Time
Lectionary No. 335
James 1:1-11; Psalm 119; Mark 8:11-13
"Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” Mark 8:12
Jesus would not give a sign because the Pharisees didn’t really want one. They just wanted an excuse not to believe in him. Jesus doesn’t play games with the insincere.
That’s good. We are all insincere sometimes, often without recognizing it. But Jesus is a friend who won’t leave us there. He leads us to face reality. Usually gently, although if need be, he can be tough.
Jesus never gives up on us. St. James assures us: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and you will be given it. But you should ask in faith, not doubting.”
The first definition of wisdom—sapientia, sapor, savor—is “a taste for spiritual things.” If you don’t feel hunger to grow in knowledge and love of God, ask for it. If you don’t ask, then you have to face reality: you don’t really want personal relationship with God.
Isn’t it good to have a friend who helps us face reality?
Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” He leads us into the way of life by truth.
Friendship is interaction. Interact with Jesus and he will make you real.
ACTION: If God isn’t giving you something you are praying for, ask yourself why you want it.
PRAYER: “Lord, be with me. Let me be with you.”
