A Friend Who Needs Me
Feast of St. Stephen, first Christian martyr
Acts 6:8-10. 7:54-59; Psalm 31; Matthew 10:17-22
You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved." Matthew
Would I want a friend who makes me unacceptable to other people?
Put it another way: Would I want to be chosen as a friend by someone because he knew I would stand by him when he needed it? Especially is that someone was Jesus Christ?
I wouldn’t dare to volunteer for that. Who am I that Jesus—God himself, Savior of the world—would even think of me? Much less need me. Or want me. What have I got to offer Jesus Christ?
Nothing. Except loyalty. Someone who won’t turn away when being his friend isn’t popular. It would be a wonderful thing if Jesus himself would count on me for that. Almost unbelievable.
There is more. I am not very brave. But Jesus promises that if I want to stand by him, he will stand by me. He will give me the courage.
When they hand you over, do not worry… It will not be you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
All Three Persons of the Holy Trinity will be involved! Father, Son, and Spirit. With me! Just because I am standing by Jesus.
Who am I that Jesus would choose me for this?
ACTION: Where religion is not the “in” thing, express your relationship with Jesus. He does it for you.
PRAYER: “For your name's sake you will lead and guide me.” Lord, remain beside me; Forever lead and guide me.
